QUEBRA PEDRA
ALSO KNOWN AS THE STONE BREAKER
FAMILY: Euphorbiaceae
GENUS: Phyllanthus
COMMON NAMES: Chanca Piedra, Stone Breaker, Pitirishi, Shatter Stone, Quinina Criolla, Hurricane Weed
PARTS USED: Aerial Parts, Whole Herb
Quebra Pedra is a small, erect annual herb that grows up to 30 or 40cm in height. It is indigenous to the rainforests of Brazil, and to other tropical areas including the Bahamas, Southern India and China.
The herb is insignificant with small white flowers, and is frequently seen only as a weed. But it has a long history of use among indigenous peoples in all the areas where it grows, and they consider it a valuable part if their culture.
Rio health offers Quebra Pedra as a tea, which is the traditional usage, but also in more convenient form as teabags. Across the world the tea is by far the most common form of administration as it supports the flow of water through the system. However, in Europe capsules of the Stone Breaker are seen as a convenient alternative for people who are out of the house and unable to make up a tea.
Rio Health sources this small but powerful plant through a network of individual and experienced gatherers who have great expertise in the identification of medicinal herbs. The individual harvests are also positively identified in a botanical laboratory in the University of Sao Paulo, where active levels are also checked.
Making use of Quebra Pedra on a daily basis is a guarantee for staying in the flow. Incidentally, the English term for this little plant is "saxifrage", which derives from the Latin and means you guessed it Stone Breaker.
