How to apply fake tan

I realised the other day when I was hot and uncomfortable whilst trying to read a book in the sun that sitting in the shade is always far more preferable. The trouble with always being in the shade however is that you have to forego that healthy glow that a hint of a tan gives you; except of course you don’t, you can use a self tanning cream or lotion. You can even spend a bit more and go for a spray tan at a salon. Not only do you get to avoid burning your skin, causing it to wrinkle and generally placing your health in danger but you can keep the tan throughout the year too. Make sure you follow these steps before applying cream or undertaking a spray tan for optimum results:

Cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise
The first step is always to prepare your skin thoroughly. This sloughs off dead skin cells, unblocks pores and ensures a seamless end result. Exfoliate your whole body paying close attention to rougher parts like the knees and elbows.

Rub vaseline into your nails
Sometimes nails can become stained by self tanning sprays or lotions. To avoid this rub vaseline over and around your nails. This will stop any chance of unsightly staining.

Apply tanner feet first
When using a self tanning lotion or cream always start with your feet and move upwards. That way you make sure you cover every part of your body. Do the tops of the feet and toes first, then legs, hips, stomach, torso, shoulders and arms. The hands should also be done. Knees can often come out darker than the rest of the legs so apply sparingly here. The same goes for elbows.

Apply tanner to your face
Make sure you hair is well out of the way before applying tanner to your face. Mix the tanning lotion you are using with an equal part of moisturiser to “water it down” and help it blend better with the rest of your skin. Use this mixture on your face and neck making sure it is rubbed in completely. A little bit will be needed on each ear lobe.

After application
After application wash your hands extremely thoroughly with warm soapy water as the lotion may well stain anything you touch. Allow your face and body to dry for at least 10 minutes before getting dressed. Make sure you don’t do anything strenuous for several hours as sweating can cause self tan to become streaky.

Whether you are using lotion at home or going for a professional spray tan, preparing your skin before application and resting while the tan fortifies will make sure you end up with an even and natural looking glow. This is another step towards getting yourself ready for the summer and prevents premature aging, burning and more serious skin problems that lying in the sun can. Can you recommend any natural self tans that look the most real?
