Beauty Advice from G.Baldwin
Q. My nails are brittle and break easily. Are there any vitamins or supplements that would make them stronger?
A. Your nails take a long time to grow from root to tip and your lifestyle and diet will have an effect on how they look. There are number of things you can do to improve the look and strength of your nails. Use rubber gloves when you wash up or have your hands in contact with detergent of any kind, treat yourself to a good hand and nail cream such as Laughing Bird’s Shea and Cocoa butter, with also contains calming papaya and organic almond. You might also like to take a supplement such as Perfectil, which combines vitamins and minerals that are essential for maintaining healthy nails, skin and hair. Perfectil will supply the nail with all the nutrients it requires for growth and before long you should see a vast improvement.
Q. I’ve just come back from holiday and the effects of sun and sea are showing in my hair! What can I do to put some shine back?
A. A holiday may make you feel great, but its effects on your hair are not always so good. Try the shampoo and conditioner from Barefoot Botanicals SOS Hair and Scalp Rescue, stocked by Baldwins. It’s packed with good things that your hair will thank you for, such as tea tree, lavender and vitamins C and E. If your hair is particularly dry and lacklustre, try the Ylang Ylang and Lavender conditioner from the Baldwins synergy range. You’ll notice an immediate increase in your hair’s shine and vitality.
Q. I’ve heard that vitamin E is important in skin care. Can you explain why?
A. There have been many studies done on the effects of vitamin E in skin care. One of its most important effect is as an extremely effective antioxidant, which put simply means that it helps to ‘mop up’ potentially harmful free radicals that are produced within our bodies all the time. When applied in a cream or a lotion it helps protect skin from the sun and keeps it smooth and soft by helping to maintain moisture. A good diet will give you a certain amount of vitamin E, but this vitamin is absorbed by the body in such a way that only small amounts reach the skin tissues. It is therefore important to take a vitamin E supplement, either on its own or as part of a multi-vitamin tablet. Make sure you read the instructions on the pack and stick to the recommended dose.
Q. Do vitamins and supplements take the place of face creams?
A. Looking after our skin on the outside is often our only consideration, but vitamins and minerals supply nutrients that healthy skin, nails and hair need and should, therefore, be part of our daily routine. Creams and other skin treatments have temporary effects on the skin and can provide important moisture as well as a sunscreen to block harmful and ageing UV rays. Taking a regular supplement, such as Perfectil, offers a more long term solution by delivering vitamins and minerals to the skin and the scalp via the blood stream. The answer is to combine your skin care treatments, using moisturiser and sun screen – even on cloudy days – and stocking up with a good quality supplement.
