Flower Remedies FAQs
Q. What are flower remedies?
A. Flower remedies are essences derived from flowers themselves or other parts of plants such as bark or leaves. They are available in drops to add to drinking water or to put directly on to the tongue, but can also be administered in the form of a spray or a cream.
Q. What are they used for?
A. The remedies are used to treat negative states of mind such as anxiety or stress. The underlying principle is that these feelings of negativity contribute to modern day illness and exacerbate medical problems. This fact is acknowledged by the medical world and the affects of stress on conditions such as stomach ulcers or asthma are well known.
Q. Who discovered them?
A. The Bach flower remedies were invented by Dr Edward Bach who was born in England in 1886. He trained as a doctor and worked at University College Hospital in London before dedicating his life to development of flower remedies as we know them today. He was a thinker ahead of his time, experimenting with treatments derived from flowers and plants and using his understanding of bacteriology – his specialist subject – and a belief in homeopathy to help his patients.
Q. How are they made?
A. The flower essences are extracted from flowers, twigs, leaves and pieces of bark by steeping or boiling in water before preserving in alcohol. There are alcohol-free versions available if required.
Q. Are they safe?
A. Like all herbal or plant based remedies, always read the label and if you are unsure about whether a treatment is suitable for you either consult a qualified naturopath or your own GP. Baldwins staff will also be happy to answer your questions – just call the helpline.
