Swedish Bitters
Swedish Bitters are a relatively new concept to the public, despite being 'discovered' by Dr. Claus Samst in the 18th century. It was an old family recipe that he set down on paper and the formula has not changed since then. It is used today in the treatment of the 46 ailments on his records. It was, however, the Austrian herbalist, Maria Treben, who brought Swedish Bitters to the worlds' attention in her book, 'Health Through God's Pharmacy'.
Swedish Bitters are sold by us, at Baldwin's, in various forms. Our Optimum Phoenix Swedish Bitters Cream is used to improve the blood circulation and to prevent 'chapping'. It can also be used in the treatment of rashes, stings and insect bites. We also sell Swedish Bitters Herbs, to that you can create your own tincture. There are nine herbs in our 100g box and these can be mixed with vodka, rye or fruit spirits in order to create an elixir that becomes more beneficial the longer it is left! Alternatively, the herbs can be used to make Swedish Bitters Tea if you would rather not use alcohol.
However, if you simply want a little to hand, we also supply 100ml bottles of Dr. Samst's recipe; ready-made and ready to use. If you are at all interested in the history of Swedish Bitters and their uses, we also stock 'Health Through God's Pharmacy', which gives a fascinating insight into the recipe and its applications.
Interestingly, Dr. Samst lived to be 104 years old. A devotee of Swedish Bitters, it wasn't the ravages of age that ended his life - it was an accident he suffered whilst out riding!
