Bitter herbs are among the oldest herbs used by humans. The fact that they contribute to well-being and ease digestion has been known for centuries.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen used bitter herbs more than 900 years ago.

Historically, in almost every pharmacy and herbalist in the West, China & Indian Ayurvedic medicine, there were herbal tinctures and extracts prized for the bitter substances they contained.

These bitter brews were named for their purported benefits: "Elixir ad longam vitam" (Elixir for a long life) or "Tinctura sacra" (Holy Tincture).

At present, bitter substances are still at least as relevant and important.

Environmental pollution, or even industrially processed foods (e.g., fast foods, preservatives, dyes, pollutants, etc.) often put a strain on our digestive system.

We often eat too much, too fat and too sweet. Couple this with the increasing stress of daily life and a lack of excercise and it can lead to digestive issues.

Today's problem is that we do not have enough bitterness in our natural food. Traditionally, a lot of breads and meals contained much more bitterness, which was much more helpful for the digestive process.

Because of the increased amount of bitter substances in food, the liver and gall bladder, the pancreas and the intestinal glands were stimulated to give more digestive secretions, thus increasing the efficacy of the whole digestive process.
