Organic Wholefoods FAQs

Q.I’m confused by what is meant by organic when it’s written on labels?

A. You’re not the only one! Lots of people find organic labelling confusing, but in simple terms if anything is labelled as ‘organic’ it must have been produced in accordance with European law on organic production. In this country producers of food – such as growers and processors – must be registered by recognised bodies that come under the auspices of the UK Register of Organic Food Standards. Other European countries have different bodies that have a similar role. When you buy organic you can be assured that no fertilisers or pesticides have been used, with the exception of those that are approved for use in organic production, and that the soil on which the food has been produced is certified as organic by being free of such substances for a minimum of two years.

Q.What can organic wholefoods do for me?

A. Lots of people eat organically because they want to ensure that their food is free from pesticide or fertiliser residue, but organic wholefoods will also give you a ready supply of health promoting vitamins, minerals and nutrients. They will also help to increase your intake of beneficial fats and fibre, which is often lacking in the diet today. Because wholefoods are not over processed or refined, they retain their valuable healthy properties without incorporating unnecessary additives that are often considered detrimental to health.

Q. How can I include wholefoods in my everyday diet?

A. There are a host of organic wholefoods that can be substituted for everyday items in your diet, helping not only to give you additional nutrients but also to assist with a sensible programme of eating that will reduce fat and increase fibre. For example, use seeds or nuts sprinkled over salads, change white rice to organic brown rice, or have a bowl of wholefood cereal for breakfast. You can replace sweet or salty snacks with grains and seeds, which are tasty and filling, thus cutting down on your saturated fat and salt intake. Baldwins have lots of products from which you can choose, including dried fruits, pulses, flours, grains, nuts and seeds.
