Vegans do not consume, wear, or use any products that are made from animals, or a by-product of animals. Vegans not only avoid eating meat and seafood but seek to remove all products from animal origins.
There are some that adopt an all-encompassing vegan philosophy and some that simply want to adhere to a plant-based diet. Whether you’re plant-based for health benefits or vegan for the animals, you’re sure to find what you need amongst our huge range of planet and animal-friendly products.
What’s the difference between vegans and vegetarians?
Vegetarians simply avoid eating meat, and some products that use meat in the creation process (like cheese made using rennet, or wine made using isinglass). Veganism on the other hand is an all-encompassing philosophy that seeks to abolish all forms of animal exploitation.
What can vegans eat?
Vegans can eat a wide range of foods as long as they don’t contain any animal by-products. Natural foods such as fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy and meat alternatives, make for a balanced and nutritious plant-based diet.
Vegans do not eat any foods that come from an animal source or have animal-derived ingredients.
Which ingredients are not vegan?
There are many obvious products that aren’t vegan like meat or dairy, but many non-vegan ingredients are hidden on the label. Watch out for:
Lactose and lactic acid
Are all vegan products cruelty-free?
Unfortunately, there are some vegan products that are not cruelty-free. This is normally when big corporate brands (ones that aren’t inherently plant-based) offer products to simply capitalise on the movement’s popularity.
A lot of vegans only consider a product to be safe for their use if they have not negatively affected or exploited an animal in any way. There are some products that might contain a single ingredient that has gone through animal testing.
At Baldwins, we’re highly selective about the brands we stock - absolutely none of our products (or their ingredients) have been tested on animals, so you can feel safe in the knowledge that our range is good for you and great for animals.
Are skincare products vegan?
There should be a clear vegan symbol on the packaging if a product is vegan, as plant-based brands are usually very proud and clear about their stance.
However, there are some products referred to as ‘accidentally vegan’ - that are (in theory) safe for vegans to use. You’ll need to check the labels carefully and look out for any animal by-products including:
