How to dilute an essential oil at home

When creating your own diluted essential oils, you should never go above 5% essential oil. Any higher than this, and the properties of the oil will be too extreme and concentrated, and, therefore, less effective.

As a good rule of thumb, for every 10ml of carrier oil, add one to 10 drops of essential oil, or 0.05-0.5ml. So, for 100ml of carrier oil, add in 1-5ml of essential oil. Buying pre-diluted oils means this is all done for you so there are no mistakes and no issues.
How to dilute an essential oil at home

Essential oils diluted in carrier oils are best used topically – on the skin. You can spray it on and rub it in, or use a rollerball applicator and let it soak in.

You can also add a few drops of essential oils to your creams and lotions too – just never use it neat on your skin.
