Description
Medicago sativa (herba)
Origin: Hungary
The roots of Alfalfa grow waayyy deep (around 20 to 30 feet); one of the world's deepest-rooting plants. This enables the plant to withdraw minerals from far beyond, which is why it is very nutrient rich. A grounding herb indeed.
Health perks:
Antioxidant rich, which is useful in neutralising oxidative stress by combatting free radicals. This supports the overall immune system ensuring effective organ functoning of each body system. Hence, it reduces inflammation in the body.
Alfalfa contains:
Vitamin A; enhances skin health by stimulating the growth and renewal of cells. This is particulary helpful towards ocular-related health.
Vitamin C (abundant); the base for collagen production in which it expresses skin, hair and nails. Additionally, the herb gives a boost throughout the immune system.
Vitamin E; supports cell membrane stability and tissue repair; encouraging resilience of tissues and of the skin.
Vitamin K; prevents bone fractures and osteoporosis by regulating bone mineralisation, therefore maintaining bone density.
Overall, this helps affirming integrity of tissue composing the mechanisms throughout the body.
Alfalfa is also a source of iron, which is important in the production of haemoglobin, essential for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Its phosphorous content is crucial for energy production, and necessary for bone and teeth composition. Both minerals are significant in governing energy levels via efficient circulatory distribution and metabolic synergy. Another mineral such as copper, has a valuable role in managing the nervous system and functioning of the immune system.
Alfalfa can help stabilise blood sugar levels in diabetes, by managing the body's relationship with insulin and promoting effective metabolic health (as stated before). It is a source of dietary fibre that supports the functioning of the gut, thus helping indigestion.
Antioxidants, fibre and vitamins combined, are altogether useful in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol (LDL).
Alfalfa also contains mild phytoestrogens (isoflavones and coumestans) that may gently support hormone balancing in the female reproductive system, particularly during menopause. Additonally, it can serve as a nourishing tonic; facilitating build and strengthen all-encompassing vitality.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
