Description
Withania somnifera (radicis pulvis)
Origin: India
Ashwagandha is a known Indian herb (however it s also found in Africa) of Ayurvedic medicine, and it's becoming more and more popular in Western herbalism. Speaking of roots, that is the part used medicinally.
This root belongs to the pepper family, and altogether contains these compounds called withanolides. These compounds are similar in appearance and action to the active compounds found in Panax Ginseng. Not to confuse, but Ashwagandha is also known as the Indian Ginseng.
Health perks:
Ashwagandha is widely used for stress relief, as it can help the body regulate mental, emotional and physical stress.
The root supports the nervous system by protecting nerve cells, and helping maintain overall neural health.
By lowering cortisol which can impair focus and mental clarity, Ashwagandha can improve congitive funciton. Studies propose its withanolide compounds further support memory by enhancing neuroplasticity and synaptic activity. The root promotes better sleep not only by reducing cortisol levels, but also by increasing GABA activity which advocates relaxation, and better quality of sleep.
The herb's cell-protective properties may help prevent or slow down the development of cataracts.
By reducing chronically elevated cortisol, Ashwagandha can help minimise increased LDL cholesterol. Remember we still require good cholesterol for maintaining brain health.
Ashwagandha can help support adequate iron levels in the body. Therefore, it also contributes to strengthening cardiac muscle and function. This occurs by managing stress and inflammation, but by also supporting the endocrine system (erythropoietin regulation).
It's associated with balancing hormone compositions where the thyroid***, the regulation of testosterone and oestrogen, and the adrenals are concerned.
Extensive research has demonstrated the benefits of utilising Ashwagandha to help with the immune system. The root enhances immune cell types that influence the reduction of inflammatory mediators, and its signalling pathways. Once more, the effect it has on stress is reverberant on overall states of the body.
It's a great herb (1 leveled teaspoon) to add to your 'golden milk', that can help you achieve that grounded quality of sleep.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
