Description
Foeniculum vulgare [herba]
Origin: Spain/ Egypt
The ancient Greeks called Fennel: 'Marathon', named after a battlefield where they began to grow. It is said in Greek mythology that Prometheus had a hollow Fennel stalk that was used to carry the stolen fire from the Gods to humanity.
To the Romans, Fennel symbolised strength and courage for the warriors. Whereas, for medieval Europeans, fennel was hung over doorways to ward off negative energy/ spirits.
Health perks:
Fennel contains phytoestrogens, which helps regulate menstrual cycles, dissipate cramping and support nursing mother as it has traditionally been used as a galactogogue (induce lactation) across the Mediterranean and Asia.
In folk tradition, Fennel is a grounding herb. Reduces tension that manifests in the gut, as well as calming the nervous system (a useful addition to a mixture of calming herbs).
It is particularly comforting for thr gut and soothing for the gastrointestinal tract, appeases bloating and gas, and calms cramping. Fennel is useful in irritable bowel syndrome, because of its spasmodic-relieving herbal action, the herb relaxes the smooth muscle of the gut. At the same time, gastric fluid (your hydrochloric acid and enzymes) is stimulated, therefore encouraging effective assimilation of your nutrients.
Fennel is an antimicrobial and expectorant with regards to the respiratory system and therefore is useful when it comes to clearing excess mucus from the bronchioles. Naturally, this can be used for eliminating congestion, consoling coughs and resolving bronchitis.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
