Description
Marshmallow (Althea officinalis) grows really, really well in wet areas (you guessed it, marshes!) and is originally from Europe (now grown in the USA too).
Both the leaves & root are used medicinally.
Primary benefits of Marshmallow root are down to its mucilage content.
Mucilage soothes & protects irritated mucous membranes and soothes bronchioles and the esophagus and digestive tracts.
Marshmallow root is therefore great at soothing sore throats, cold symptoms, Gastro-Oesophageal reflux, Asthma, indigestion & heartburn.
You can make a cold-infusion of marshmallow root the night before by adding 30-45 grams of dried root to 750ml of water and leave it to steep overnight.
The resulting infusion is strained as required and drunk three to five times the next day.
It's a pretty gooey herb so it's best taken on its own.
I've read of people drinking it in espresso-sized shots throughout the day when afflicted with a sore throat.
Marshmallow has also been used in skin products for its anti-inflammatory effects and general soothing nature, as a skin cream ingredient it may help reduce skin redness and inflamation.
