Baldwins Asafoetida Gum Powder
Baldwins Asafoetida Gum Powder
The dried and powdered Oleo gum resin of Ferula asafoetida with fenugreek seed powder
Ferula asafoetida (pulvis resinae) [also known as Hing]
Origin: India / Iran, processed in Pakistan
Ingredients: Asafoetida Gum, Fenugreek [Trigonella foenum-graecum]
Best known for its pungent and unpleasant smell when raw.
Asafoetida Gum Powder originates from the sap taken from the roots and stem of the ferula species (fennel). It is held in high regards within indigenous medicine; the Unani system. This system was first implemented in ancient Greek, then developed later by Arab and Persion scholars. The resin was introduced to India by Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and is now greatly used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Passably adding Asafoetida (dissolved in hot oil) enhances the flavour of vegetable and mushroom dishes. This resin is believed to give a smooth flavour (similar to leeks). However, can also be added to meat; whether fried or barbequed to express a flavour of its own.
Health perks:
Promotes digestion by reducing the growth of indigenous microflora that can cause gas and bloating. Can also act as a laxative and vermifuge, thus encouraging a better appetite altogether. In India, it is said to work as an antibiotic for children.
Attributed to lung health for its ability to tend to colds and the flu, and alleviate asthma and bronchitis.
Asafoetida can have a sedative effect promoting a relexation; setting the condition of the nervous sytem for adequate sleep. On the other hand, it also nourishes, which is a significant quality to encourage in nervous system imbalances such as, epilepsy and sciatica.
The resin's hot quality is valuable for reproductive health in females as an emmenagogue; to stimulate mentruation, but also ease cramping (spasmodic-relieving herb).
Additonally, it lowers blood pressure and thins out the blood.
Historical scriptures and currently, Ayurvedic texts describe the use of Asafoetida being a remedy for opium intoxication.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
