Baldwins Liquorice Root Cut ( Glycyrrihiza Glabra )
Baldwins Liquorice Root Cut ( Glycyrrihiza Glabra )
Glycyrrhiza glabra [radix]
Origin: China
This Liquorice root is decorticated, and simply infers the root has been stripped from it's outer bark.
Liquorice root has been adored as an antiquity, evident from Egyptian tombs (King Tut), Traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Greek medical scriptures.
In the Middle Ages, Liquorice became a confection in Europe. A key area of Liquorice's evolution is Pontrefract, West Yorkshire, UK, where 'Pontrefract Cakes' were born; the earliest forms of Liquorice candy.
Health perks:
A demulcent herb used to protect and restore integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Mucus is stimulated in the stomach and intestines, shielding the membrane of the gut from excess hydrochloric acid and irritation. This makes Liquorice particularly useful in the management of gut imbalances such as acid reflux, peptic ulcers and gastritis. Research highlights its role in mucosal defence and encouraging epithelial repair of the gut tissues.
This herb is also an expectorant of the respiratory system. Liquorice root moistens dry, irritated mucous membranes, whilst also helping to loosen and expel thick mucus. This dual action is useful in both dry coughs and congestive bronchial imbalance. The inflammatory-relieving nature of the root helps reduce inflammation through the throat and bronchial passages of the lungs.
Widely regarded in supporting the adrenal glands after continuous impact of stress. This is suited as a tonic for chronic fatigue and exhaustion.
Notably, Liquorice also impacts the immune system, expressing antiviral activity attributed to its glycyrrhizin compounds and others. These compounds influence the signalling pathways of the immune system; inhibiting viral replication.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
