Floral Waters & Distillates

Flower waters and hydrosols are essentially the same, but it’s the creation process where their differences show.

Hydrosols are created during the distillation process and take on more than the flower’s scent. They absorb nutrients and minerals from the leaves, stems, and barks as well, creating a more rounded, nourishing formula.

Flower waters are generally waters that have been fragranced with essential oils. A similar idea, but with a shorter lifespan, and they can include additives and preservatives too.

However, the term floral water is interchangeable and used for both. Check the packaging before you buy to confirm if the water was created using distillation.

Most floral waters, or hydrosols, are by-products of the essential oil distillation process.

• Essential oils are the purest form of the plant. The oils are vaporised from the plant and extracted separately. This means they’re highly concentrated. As a result, the benefits are more intense too.
• Floral waters are created using the condensed steam from the distillation process. It’s typically softer, more gently scented with similar benefits but a higher dilution rate. Therefore, they can be used as they are without further dilution needed.

Since floral waters can be used neat and they’re less harsh on the skin, their uses are endless. They can be used as facial toners, they can soothe rashes and bites, they can refresh your skin in hot weather, and much, much more:

• Apply to soothe irritations and sunburn
• Wipe children’s faces and calm them at the same time
• Add it to your laundry for a nice scent
• Spray around the home to freshen things up
• Add it to your bath
• Use it in your cooking
