Zingiber officinale [rhizoma]

Origin: Nigeria

A perennial plant hailing form the far flung shores of places like India, Mexico & China. Although we mention the word root here, we are actually dealing with rhizome. Rhizome is the horizontal underground stem that stores nutrients, whereas the root is the vessel that transports water and nutrients.  If you separate a piece of fresh Ginger rhizome off, it will grow on as a new plant. However, our Ginger root is dried and therefore will not.

Health perks:

This classic culinary herb has a lot of success when used to ease nausea; particularly motion sickness & morning sickness. As effective as dramamine (the popular pharmacological sea sickness tablet), without the drowsiness side effects.

A great digestive tonic; stimulates the digestive tract and tones the intestinal muscles.

Ginger is stimulating and warming for those cold winter mornings as it expands blood vessels to allow for easier circulation.

Traditionally used to help osteoarthritic conditions. The root is often served in capsule form also containing Turmeric/ curcumin (Curcuma longha), as well as Frankincense (Boswellia serrata). Both combined bring relief to inflammation.

Altogether Ginger root is a great herb to connect a mixture together.

How to use Ginger root?

Make a decoction. 1 tablespoon of the dried root per 2 cups of water. Simmer for around 8 minutes and leave to boil for 6 minutes. Allow to cool to preferred temperature, strain and drink up to three times a day. What has been strained, can be boiled again the second time round.

P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
