Baldwins Vine Leaves ( Vitus Vinifera )
Baldwins Vine Leaves ( Vitus Vinifera )
Vitus vinifera (herba)
Origin: Bulgaria
Also referred to as your grapevines. Grapevine cultivation dates back over 8000 years, especially in regions of Caucasus and Mesopotamia.
During the time of transforming grapes into wine, the leaves were quickly noted to be edible. Vine leaves are a part of a delicacy called 'Dolma'(vine leaves encapsulating rice + herbs + meat) in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. This traditional form of delicacy dates to the Ottoman Empire. Nowadays, this is a staple across Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Iran.
Vine leaves are also linked with Dionysus, the God of wine and celebration, as well as fertility. This herb symbolises abundance and prosperity in one's life.
Although the herb is a beloved culinary symbol, it is also a connotation of connection that can be shared and passed on.
Health perks:
Due to its richness in polyphenols and flavonoids, Vine leaves help reduce inflammation and prevent oxidative stress in the body.
Traditionally the herb is used to support the vascular conditions, especially in the treatment of varicose veins and heavy legs. Respectively, Vine leaves improve blood circulation and as a lymphatic herb, it helps drain excess fluid, therefore proving useful in cases where there is water retention; oedema.
In Turkey, it is known for Vine leaves to manage blood sugar levels, which is influenced by the herb's lutein and zeaxanthin compounds.
Used in folk medicine for minor wound support. The herb's high content of vitamin A improves skin, bone tissue and eyesight.
On the other hand, it also has magnesium and calcium, which helps ease muscular cramping.
Contains tannins that can reduce mild diarrhoea. Tannins are astringent and therefore tones the gut lining.
P.S. ***If pregnant/ nursing, or there are health imbalances that require attention, it is always wise to consult a qualified herbal practitioner... even before trying a new remedy.
