The symbol for this set of essences is the Yin and Yang sign. Yin and Yang literally mean ‘dark side’ and ‘sunny side’ of a hill and are analogies for the harmonious interplay of opposites in the universe. Just as the areas of light and shade on a hill change throughout the day, so yin is constantly changing into yang and yang into yin. Ideally, however, they must compensate for each other to keep balance and equilibrium. Imbalance in the body obstructs the vital life force, or ch’i, and causes dis-ease.
