Herbal Remedies FAQ

Q. What types of herbal remedies do Baldwins stock?

A. Baldwins stock a large range of herbs in many different preparations, including organic herbs which are fully certified by the Soil Association, and a range of popular and easy to cultivate seeds so that you can grow your own herbs in your garden or window box.

Q. In what forms are herbal remedies available?

A. You can use herbs in a loose form, which are dried from the leaves of other parts of the plant including roots and barks. Some people like to use tinctures or fluids, whilst others prefer tablets. For some conditions ointments or creams are best and these are also available from Baldwins.

Q. How do I prepare loose herbs?

A. Loose herbs need preparation before they can be used. Loose herbs are normally taken as an infusion made with boiling water. Add 1 teaspoon to a cup of boiling water, leave to infuse for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Roots and barks needs to be simmered in boiling water for about 10 minutes. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of the root or bark with 1.5 cups of water. After simmering, strain and cool slightly.

Q. How do I use tinctures and fluids?

A. Tinctures need no preparation – simply add 2 to 5 mls of tincture to a glass of water. Tinctures are alcoholic extractions of herbs and are normally available in 1:3 or 1:5 parts herb to liquid in 25% to 60% alcohol. If the tincture is put into boiling water, almost all the alcohol will evaporate. Herbal fluids are similar to tinctures but are 3 to 4 times their strength, and hence dosages are reduced. Alcohol free extracts are available. Herbal fluids should be prepared in the same way as tinctures.

Q. What is the dosage for herbal remedies?

A. The dosages are given on the packaging for all herbal remedies sold by Baldwins. Remember to read these carefully before use.

Q. Can I take herbal remedies with other drugs?

A. If you are undergoing any treatment or your GP or hospital has prescribed any drugs, Baldwins recommend that you speak to your doctor before taking herbal remedies. Always read the labels carefully before use because there will be important information for people who have certain conditions that might affect the way in which the herbal remedy works.

Q. Can I take herbal remedies whilst I’m pregnant?

A. Some herbal remedies are specifically designed for use during pregnancy whilst others are not suitable. Check the labels carefully as all Baldwins products will be clearly marked if they are not suitable for use during pregnancy or breast feeding. If in doubt, consult your GP.
