How to Make Bath Time More Beautiful

We love a good scrub in the tub, especially in winter. Whether you’re a solo bather or have a bath big enough for two, here’s six great ways to make bath time more beautiful for your mind, body and spirit.

Mind

Reading

Leave your phone out of reach – you don’t need to be thinking about work emails, social media or unanswered messages right now. Instead, choose a book or a magazine to take into the tub. Try dipping into a short story collection, poetry or a comforting re-read.

Aromatherapy

It’s no secret that we’re wild about essential oils. Is there anything they can’t do? Well okay, there is one thing: they can’t dissolve in water. Get around this by combining three to twelve drops of essential oil with a tablespoon (about 15ml) of carrier oil (like almond or avocado) to make sure they spread evenly through your bathwater. Try relaxing geranium, uplifting bergamot or calming chamomile. Essential oils can also be combined with a cup of Epsom salts to make your own bath salts.

Body

Pamper

Whip up a homemade hair mask like this nourishing protein treatment, or try a soothing lavender mask to leave your hair in tiptop condition. Double-up with a detoxifying face mask, like this activated charcoal mask to truly treat yourself.

Hydrate

You might be tempted to pour yourself a glass of wine to sip during your bath – and who are we to argue? – but it’s important to stay hydrated too. Make sure you have a glass of water to hand. Add cucumber slices and mint leaves, or lemon slices and a sprig of rosemary for an at-home spa experience. If you’re in full detox mode, sip on a glass of activated charcoal lemonade.

Spirit

Ambience

Music is a great way to unwind, but lyrics can clash with whatever you’re reading. That’s why we love ambient noise for beautiful baths. The gentle patter of rain falling against a window, the crackle of a fire in the hearth or even birdsong on a summer’s day can help to recalibrate your mood. There are hundreds of apps to choose from, and some let you layer sounds for a truly personalised ambience.

Candlelight

Candlelight is soothing, romantic and good for the soul. A flickering candle is the ultimate mood enhancer. Try a scent that matches the season: cold-busting eucalyptus and peppermint is perfect for winter.

Once you’ve dried off, be sure to slather yourself in plenty of moisturiser to keep your skin petal-soft and hydrated. You could even have a go at making your own
