The temptation when you get a blemish is to immediately use cosmetics to tackle the problem. The issue with this is that you are probably putting chemicals on to your skin which can cause long-term harm. Researchers in the United States revealed that 1 in 8 of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals. You could be using products that contain carcinogens, pesticides and hormone disruptors.
Cosmetics are the nuclear option so here is a list of some quick, healthy ways to tackle simple skin conditions.
When you are tense, your body releases hormones including cortisol, which may increase the skin’s oil production. You are also more prone to touching your face when feeling under pressure. This speeds up oil production in the skin and can lead to more dirt getting trapped in your pores.
Tired of water? Try tea
Drinking regular cups of herbal tea alongside your daily intake of water has been shown to have a number of additional skin benefits. Red Clover tea is a great way to recover from outbreaks of acne as it tackles toxins in your blood that lead to inflammation.
There have also been some promising studies in which green tea has been shown to help improve the condition of skin. It can either be used externally by applying it topically or by drinking it. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) – an antioxidant found in green tea – is shown to reduce bacterial growth and inflammation which are two of the main breakout triggers.
Beauty sleep is a real thing. When we don’t get enough sleep our body doesn’t get enough time to repair itself. As you sleep all sorts of cellular regeneration takes place as well as hormonal and metabolic changes. Aim to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night.
Sometimes it isn’t how much sleep you are getting but what you are sleeping on. Your pillow can be a hotbed for dirt, bacteria and dead skin. Aim to wash or change your pillowcases every weekend.
Diluted Cider Vinegar
Cider vinegar has been shown to be a simple and natural way to fight acne and reduce scarring.
Dilute one part cider vinegar with three parts water to create a toner and then apply it with a cotton pad after cleansing. You should look to do this twice a day.
Lavender Steam Facial
Lavender oil can be a pleasant way to fight blemishes. Dilute a couple of drops in a hot bowl of water and cover your head with a towel to trap the water vapour, which opens the pores and acts as an antiseptic.
Wear less Makeup
The chemicals in make-up are linked to causing dryness and irritation. By wearing less, not only will you reduce the number of chemicals you are putting on to your skin, you will also get more time in the morning which will mean more sleep.
When you wear make-up, use a natural make-up remover to ensure your skin isn’t sapped of its natural nutrients.
